Pune-Based Mylab Gets Validated To Make Coronavirus Test Kits

Mylab became the first Indian company to get validated for making Covid-19 diagnostic test kits by Drug Controller of India.

Mumbai| Pune based company Mylab, known for its molecular diagnostic, was validated for the Covid-19 diagnostic test also known as Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) tests by the Drug Controller of India and National Institute of Virology. Another German company called Altona Diagnostics was also validated.

In the current setup of labs used for covid-19 testing, it takes around 4 hours to get test results. With Mylab test time, the turnaround is about two and a half hours, Dr. Gautam Wankhde, Medical Director Mylab told Economic Times.

The company’s kit can study 1000 samples from large labs whereas 200 samples from small labs. Mylab is thinking of pricing it around Rs. 1200.

As the numbers of coronavirus cases continue to rise in India, the government has come under fire for not testing enough people. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has restricted the testing for either those with travel history to countries with coronavirus outbreak or those who are suspected of Covid-19. Indian ranks lowest as far as testing for Covid-19 is concerned. It is approximately testing 15 people per million.

The government is looking to expand its testing area, for which it has now allowed many private labs to test patients. The availability of testing kits, however, remains a pertinent issue in India’s battle against the deadly virus.

After Mylab has been validated, it’s likely that the government will now try to increase testing kits availability to hospitals and private labs.
