Mehul Choksi had approached the High Court after the bail plea was rejected in the magistrate’s court.
Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam accused and fugitive diamond merchant Mehul Choksi has received a major setback from the High Court of Dominica. The court on Friday refused to grant him bail. According to news agency ANI, the High Court has refused to grant bail to Choksi citing he is a “flight risk”.
Earlier, Choksi’s lawyers argued in the court that as a CARICOM citizen, Mehul Choksi was entitled to bail as the charges against him were covered under bailable sections. The lawyers also argued that Choksi’s health is not in good condition. In such a situation, he should be given bail after taking the security deposit.
However, the government prosecutor opposed the bail saying that the vigilance flight is at risk and Interpol has issued a notice against him. If he is granted bail, the danger of his escape will remain. Therefore he should not be granted bail.
In an earlier hearing, the Dominica High Court had adjourned the hearing on Choksi’s bail plea till June 11. Mehul Choksi had approached the High Court after the bail plea was rejected in the magistrate’s court.
Choksi’s wife said – “My husband is being defamed”
Earlier, Mehul’s wife Preeti had denied the allegations of Mehul’s alleged girlfriend Barbara Jabarika. In a conversation with the media a few days ago, Jabarika had accused Mehul of giving fake identity and creating a false theory of kidnapping. On this, Preeti replied on Thursday. Preeti says that her husband is being defamed.
