Govt Withdraws ‘Swadeshi’ Products Order for CAPF Canteens Amid Confusion

CAPF canteens do an estimated business worth 2,800 crores annually by selling their products to 50 lakh family members.

On Thursday, the Home Ministry revoked the order dated May 15 which stated only Indian products will be sold through CAPF canteens from June 1, in a major relief for FMCG businesses.

The mega-network of central paramilitary forces that caters to about 50 lakh troops and their families had “put on hold” all fresh procurement of supplies from over 400 vendors till an accuracy is received from the government on the term “swadeshi” products, officials had said on Tuesday.

On May 13, the Union Home Ministry had announced that these canteens will only sell domestic or “swadeshi” products from June 1 in an effort to give a spur to indigenous industries.

While making the announcement to go “swadeshi”, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had said that the decision to sell only domestic products through the CPCs has been taken by his ministry after PM Modi’s appeal for opting local products and being self-reliant.
