Gujarat Reports First Coronavirus Death, Toll Reaches 7; 15,000 Cases Tested, 341 Infected

Another man died of the coronavirus, first casualty in Gujarat. India fears that the virus may have entered stage 3 of local transmission.

Surat| The casualty count for India due to the novel coronavirus has risen to 7 with Gujarat reporting its first death.

India’s casualty count went up amid fears that the virus may have entered stage 3 of local transmission. The govt announced measures like curbing movement by halting passenger train traffic till March 31 to stop the virus from spreading.

“One #COVID19 positive patient, male 69 yrs, died today in Surat hospital. He was having co-morbid conditions. One female, 65 years, died in Vadodara hospital but her test report for COVID is awaited. She was also having co-morbid conditions” ANI quoted the Health & Family department, Gujarat, as saying.

Earlier, two deaths were reported from Bihar and Maharashtra.

ANI reported that a 38-year-old man died of kidney failure at the state-run AIIMS in Patna after testing positive for the coronavirus. Dr Prabhat Kumar Singh told the news agency the man belonged to Munger in Bihar and had returned home from Kolkata two days ago.

This is the first case of highly contagious COVID-19 reported from the state. He is probably the youngest person in the country to die due after contracting the infection.

In Maharashtra, the state that has reported maximum coronavirus cases across India (74), a 63-year-old man admitted to a private hospital in Mumbai died this morning. “The patient had a chronic history of diabetes, high blood pressure and ischemic heart disease,” Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihamumbai Municipal Corporation, said in a statement. He developed acute respiratory distress syndrome leading to his death.

This is the second death in Mumbai linked to coronavirus, which originated in China and has spread to over 140 countries. Three deaths have been reported from Delhi, Punjab and Karnataka this month. All of these patients were above 60.

Ten more positive cases have been reported in the last 24 hours in Maharashtra, according to the state government. Of these, six are in Mumbai and four are in Pune.

The three deaths will increase India’s toll to 7 when the central government’s health ministry updates its tracker. As many as 341 have been diagnosed with the disease as of this morning.
