Hathras Victim Cremated Overnight To Avoid “Large-Scale Violence”: UP Govt Tells SC

“The whole issue was being exploited and a caste/ communal colour was being given,” UP Govt told the Supreme Court replying to a petition on Hathras incident.

New Delhi| The Uttar Pradesh govt has cited intel inputs of a possible “large scale-violence” as the reason why the Hathras victim’s body was cremated overnight. The state government was replying to a petition filed in the Supreme Court seeking a probe in the case monitored by a current or retired judge of the Supreme Court or the high court. The petition also seeks trial of the case to be moved out of UP and be shifted to Delhi.

The alleged gangrape and the death of a Dalit woman from Hathras and the dead-of the night cremation of the victim’s body allegedly without the consent of the family in Uttar Pradesh has sparked a massive outrage across the country. Justifying its act of the cremation of the victim’s body at 2.30 AM on Wednesday night, the UP Govt in its affidavit said that there was also a high alert in the district due to Babri Masjid Demolition case verdict the next day.

It cited specific inputs that suggested that there could be a gathering of protesters from both the communities/castes, supporters of political parties and the media which could turn violent and lead to major law and order problem in the village.

It further added that district administration had received intelligence inputs as to how a dharna was organized outside the Safdarjung hospital in Delhi where the victim took her last breath. “The whole issue was being exploited and a caste/communal colour was being given,” UP Govt told the Supreme Court.

The Yogi Government has also sought a court-monitored CBI probe and said that the cremation was done with the agreement of family members of the victim. Blaming political parties and a section of media, it said that they tried to incite violence and communal riots in the state. It also said that “vested interests are trying to hamper a fair investigation”.
