New Delhi: In the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, on June 9-10, India in his first year is likely to focus on counter-terrorism, threats from extremist groups in Afghanistan and neighbouring areas.
Prime Minister Modi is set to focus on fighting cross-border terrorism, along with connectivity projects that do not violate the sovereignty of countries. India will be accompanied along with Pakistan, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan as a full member state.
India looks at the Shanghai Summit as an opportunity to enhance its presence in the Eurasian region, including Central Asia, with an eye on widening security and economic partnership.
PM Modi is scheduled to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on June 9. He will interact with various leaders from Central Asia along with meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit formed in the year 2001 will focus on regional security challenges, including threats from the Islamic State, Taliban, and the Haqqani network. According to reports from Chinese state-run news agency Xinhua, “The Summit will discuss measures to fight the “three evil forces” of terrorism, extremism and separatism, drug trafficking, and cybercrime.”
