Indian Shops May Run Out Of Atta, Maida Soon, Suggests Report

The flour mills of the country, which produce wheat flour products such as atta, sooji, and maida are facing a severe shortage of wheat supplies.

Mumbai| Grocery and retail stores of India may run out or see a sharp fall in the stock of atta (wheat flour), sooji and maida in next two weeks as the flour mills face an acute shortage of wheat supplies.

According to the CNBC-TV18 report, the flour mills of the country, which produce wheat flour products such as atta, sooji, and maida are facing a severe shortage of wheat supplies and are functioning on the very short stock of wheat.

The mills have now appealed for government intervention in the wake of shortage.

One of the reasons for the shortage is the lockdown imposed in hundreds of districts across the country due to coronavirus outbreak. This has resulted in the shutting down of mandis and wholesale markets, sources said in a report. The unseasonal rains too have affected the process of procurement of wheat, they said.

The report says that Roller Flour Millers Federation has written to the Food Corporate of India (FCI) explaining the present situation in detail. It has also appealed to the FCI to let general managers at all regional offices the authority to sell the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS(D)) wheat directly to the mills in this crisis situation.

This is in addition to the third-party tender action through M-junction, Roller Flour Federation further added in the statement.

The federation has also requested an extension in the time period for payment against the wheat purchased under OMSS (D) scheme for two weeks. It has also appealed to reduce the minimum reserve price of wheat according to OMSS (D) scheme.

Due to the ban on transport during the lockdown, the Federation has also asked the government to provide clarity on the transport of goods across the border, in states and union territories.

Lately, the government has been asking citizens to not hoard groceries and food products in large numbers.
