With nearly 1.45 lakh active cases, Maharashtra continues to be the worst affected state but is witnessing a drop in active cases due to higher recoveries

NEW DELHI| On Thursday India reported the biggest single-day spike of 52,123 coronavirus cases, taking the total caseload closer to 16 lakh. As of today, India has registered 15,83,792 coronavirus cases.

The country’s total death toll is also nearing 35,000 after 775 new fatalities were reported in the past 24 hours.

According to the health ministry’s fresh update, there are 5.28 lakh active cases in India at the moment. However, on the brighter side, more than 10 lakh people have recovered after getting infected.

With nearly 1.45 lakh active cases, Maharashtra continues to be the worst affected state but is witnessing a drop in active cases due to higher recoveries. Health ministry data also shows that cases are now rising faster in some southern states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. All of them have over well over 50,000 active cases.

States like Odisha, Bihar and Assam are also witnessing a sharper rise in cases. Odisha currently has nearly 10,000 active cases, Bihar has over 14,700 and Assam’s tally stands over 8,200. Both Bihar and Assam are witnessing a surge in cases due to the ongoing flood situation.

Delhi fight against the coronavirus has become the biggest success story in India. The national capital currently accounts for 10,887 active cases while over 1.17 lakh people have recovered.

On Wednesday, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said the state no more needs additional beds in hotels and that more people are reporting mild symptoms, for which treatment is being provided at home.

Neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, however, seems to be witnessing a gradual rise in case. It currently has nearly 28,000 active cases. India’s most populous state saw a rise of over 1,700 active cases in the past 24 hours.

Many states have reimposed strict lockdowns across all districts or in high-risk cities and containment zones in order to curb rising infections. Meanwhile, the govt also released plans for further easing activities as part of Unlock 3.0 guidelines.

Under Unlock 3.0, the government has decided to reopen more businesses and revoke night curfews. However, schools and other educational institutes will remain closed until August 31, the guidelines state.
