Justice Chelameshwar asks CJI Mishra to take the matter of government interference in judicial appointments forward

Justice Chelameshwar in his letter also said that it has been a norm that most of the recommendations by the collegium are ignored.

 

A week after writing a letter to Chief Justice of India Deepak Mishra asking for full court judicial inquiry on alleged government interference in judicial appointments, SC judge Justice Chelameshwar has said that it is up to the CJI to take the matter forward. Justice Chelameshwar had sent the copies of letter to other 22 Supreme Court judges as well.
The historic press conference conducted by the four judges of Supreme Court earlier this year indicated at the internal issues in the judiciary. It also pointed out at the tug of war between the government and judiciary.
Justice Chelameshwar had written the letter in response to Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court’s letter to CJI saying he had reopened the case on judicial officer P Krishna Bhat after receiving a directive from the law ministry.
Justice Chelameshwar in his letter also said that it has been a norm that most of the recommendations by the collegium are ignored. “for some time, our unhappy experience has been that the government accepting our recommendations is an exception and sitting on them is the norm, ” he said in his letter.
