Defence lawyer Ankur Sharma previously commented about the Women investigation officer Shwetambari Sharma that “She is a girl, how intelligent can she be?” in the Kathua rape case.
JAMMU: Shwetambari Sharma, the only woman in the investigation team of the Kathua child rape case was questioned by the defence lawyer saying “She is a girl, how intelligent can she be?”
Talking to media, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Shwetambari Sharma said, “The SIT faced lots of difficulties in the course of collecting evidence in the rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl”. The DSP further added that “It hurts when you are targeted and your intelligence is doubted just because you are a woman. What should I comment on such a chauvinist remark, the whole nation is there to comment on it,” responding to the defence lawyers sexist remark.
“An agitation was going on and going among the provocative persons to collect the evidence and take statements was not easy, especially because a pro-Hindu group and lawyers were campaigning in support of the accused,” she told the reporters in Jammu.
Shwetambri Sharma is the only woman officer in the SIT of the Jammu and Kashmir Crime Branch that investigated the rape and murder of the eight-year-old in the Kathua. The trial against all the eight accused in the rape and murder case of the eight-year-old has begun.
Two First Information Reports (FIRs) have been filed in the case – one against the eight accused and the other against a group of lawyers that allegedly tried to stop the police from filing a charge-sheet against the accused.
