A sub-inspector rank officer of the CBI named Abhishek Tiwari was arrested after he allegedly accepted illegal gratification.
According to officials, in connection with the leak of the agency’s internal probe documents against former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested its own officer.
A sub-inspector rank officer of the CBI named Abhishek Tiwari was arrested after he allegedly accepted illegal gratification from people close to Anil Deshmukh. Tiwari was also allegedly in touch with Deshmukh’s lawyer, sources said.
On Wednesday, the lawyer was also detained from Anil Deshmukh’s Mumbai house, and is now being questioned by the investigation agency.
“CBI has registered a case against its sub-inspector, a Nagpur-based advocate and unknown others on certain allegations, including illegal gratification. During the investigation of said case, the CBI has today (Wednesday) arrested the sub-inspector. The said advocate is being questioned,” said CBI Spokesperson RC Joshi to India Today.
Searches were also conducted by the agency at the premises linked to Abhishek Tiwari in Prayagraj and Delhi.
Anil Deshmukh’s son-in-law, Gaurav Chaturvedi, as per sources, was also questioned by the CBI on Wednesday. The agency, however, let him go later.
The Congress and NCP, after the internal documents came into the public domain, demanded an inquiry asking why the case was lodged against Anil Deshmukh when the CBI officer found no evidence of corruption.
To investigate how an internal probe report of the CBI was leaked and reached in hands of people close to Anil Deshmukh, the federal probe agency has tasked a special team.
