Haryana court announces life sentence to godman Rampal

Chandigarh | The Haryana sessions court on Tuesday announced a life sentence to self-styled godman Rampal in connection to the murder case of four women and a child.

Earlier on October 11, the court had convicted him along with his 28 followers in both the murder cases. The court has also imposed a fine of one lakh rupees on him. The court will announce the quantum of another case on Wednesday. To avoid any kind of disturbance in the law and order the local administration deployed a large number of policemen. The administration also kept the Para-military forces and Rapid Action Force (RAF) jawans on standby. The administration had installed 48 check posts in Hisar to prevent entry of anti-social elements.

He was arrested in 2014 after a two-week conflict between the state police and his followers. Six people were killed in the process after Rampal’s devotees turned into a private army to prevent his arrest while hundreds were injured. The devotees attacked the army with stones, batons and guns.
