Maharashtra Excise Department To Introduce E-Token System For Liquor Sale

A senior excise department official informed on Monday that under the new system a person can get a token by registering on the state excise department website.

Mumbai| Maharashtra Excise department has decided to start an online sale of tokens on a pilot basis for the sale of liquor in Pune city in order to avoid the crowding outside liquor shops.

This decision comes in the wake of incidents where boozers gathered in large numbers outside liquor shops defying the social distancing norms laid to contain the spread of coronavirus.

A senior excise department official informed on Monday that under the new system a person can get a token by registering on the state excise department website and then can go to the liquor shop to buy the liquor.

“Only those who get the token can go to the shop and buy liquor. It will help in preventing long queues of people outside liquor shops. Huge crowds outside shops put a lot of pressure on the state administration to enforce physical distancing,” he further added.

He also said that the government is planning to issue a limited amount of tokens for liquor sales in order to avoid crowding on the streets.

The system will be started on a pilot basis in Pune city for now and if found successful, will be implicated in other parts of the state too, he further added.
