Mamata Banerjee, Uddhav Thackeray To Attend Opposition Meet Called By Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi

The recent monsoon session of Parliament saw opposition solidarity against the government on issues of Pegasus espionage controversy, Farmers’ agitation and inflation.

 

Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi will hold a digital meeting with several prominent opposition leaders of the country on Friday as a part of an exercise of opposition solidarity. The meeting may also be attended by the Chief Ministers of West Bengal, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Jharkhand. Sources say that Sonia Gandhi is trying to corner the government with the opposition parties on major issues facing the country and this meeting has been convened under this effort.

 

Opposition parties are trying to unite at the national level to fight the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi so that a tough challenge can be presented by the opposition in the next Lok Sabha elections. The recent monsoon session of Parliament saw opposition solidarity against the government on issues of Pegasus espionage controversy, Farmers’ agitation and inflation. Meanwhile, former Congress president Rahul Gandhi was seen as the focal point of the entire exercise of opposition unity.

Who Will Attend?

Several opposition leaders, including West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren and Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar, have been invited for the digital meeting with Sonia Gandhi. Sonia Gandhi has called the meeting amid the Pegasus espionage controversy and the ongoing allegations in the recent monsoon session of Parliament.

Agenda of the Opposition Meet

Although, the agenda of the meeting has not been unveiled, it is expected that the meeting will focus on discussing the issues of the opposition parties and strengthen the opposition unity. Sources said that in the background of the situation in Afghanistan and some recent developments in the Northeast, the opposition parties may question the government regarding national security.
