MJ Akbar is facing allegations of sexual harassment amidst the #MeToo movement in India.

Union Minister of State for External Affairs, M J Akbar has reportedly sent in his resignation to PMO, reports suggested. The journalist turned politician is facing allegations of sexual harassment amidst the #MeToo movement in India. According to the reports, MJ Akbar sent his resignation via email.

Since October 8, several women- senior journalists and former colleagues of Akbar have come forward with their stories of workplace harassment at the hands of Akbar. MJ Akbar who was at that time in Nigeria, decided to respond to the allegations after returning India. The statement from his side can be expected any time. Sources say in all likelihood it will be accepted and he will be relieved of his ministerial duties by evening.

Since the survivors’ stories started pouring in the govt came under pressure from the opposition and media personalities. Congress spokesperson Jaipal reddy said, “MJ Akbar has the stature of being a veteran journalist in addition to being junior External Affairs Minister. Sushma Swaraj could not comment on her own subordinate. We demand an inquiry into the allegations.”

While the BJP has maintained silence on the issue, the party sources said that the final call will be taken by PMO.
