MHA Forms Committee To Probe Three Gandhi Family Trusts Including Rajiv Gandhi Foundation

A few days ago, the BJP Chief JP Nadda had alleged that the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation had received donations from the Chinese Embassy.

 

New Delhi| The Union Home Ministry has ordered an inquiry into the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation and Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust and the Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust. The Home Ministry has also formed an Inter-Ministerial Committee to probe the dealings. The investigation will be headed by a special director of the ED. It will be ascertained whether these two trusts belonging to Gandhi family violated the rules.
A few days ago, the BJP alleged that the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation had received donations from the Chinese Embassy.

Three trusts will be investigated

According to reports, a total of three trusts will be investigated. These are Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust and Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust. There are allegations that these trusts violated the rules. There are also allegations of violating the Prevention of Money Laundering Act and Income Tax rules. A few days ago, BJP President JP Nadda had raised questions over RGF receiving a donation from the Chinese government and the Chinese embassy.

A picture of Rahul Gandhi signing a memorandum also went viral in which present-day Chinese President Xi Jinping can be seen standing in the background. The Congress rejected these allegations and said that the BJP is making such allegations to divert attention from the issue of the border dispute with China.

Meanwhile, MPCC President Balasaheb Thorat reacting to the development said that the Govt is trying to hide its failure in handling Chinese infiltration, increasing fuel prices and Corona Crisis by silencing the voices of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. “Our leaders and the Congress party will continue to raise their voices in the national interest despite such pressure,” Thorat said.

ED special director will lead the probe

According to the information, a special director of the Enforcement Directorate will lead this investigation team. A Home Ministry official said, “An Inter-Ministerial Committee will conduct the Co-ordination during the investigation. Violations of PMLA, the Income Tax Act and FCRA Act will be investigated.

What is the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation?

It was launched by Sonia Gandhi on 21 June 1991 to further the goals of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. The Foundation works for the promotion of education, science and technology, the empowerment of the underprivileged and the disabled. Its functioning is run by the amount received from donations. Sonia Gandhi is its chairperson. Apart from former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and P. Chidambaram are trustees.
