In a first, NITI Aayog releases Innovation Index, Karnataka tops the list

The purpose of releasing this NITI Aayog Innovation index is to assess the innovation system of states and union territories so that policy makers can give direction to their schemes based on it.

 

New Delhi|In a first, NITI Aayog has released the Innovation Index of States. NITI Aayog has prepared this index on the basis of Global Innovation Index. Karnataka has bagged the number one spot and has been described as the most favourable investment destination. Following Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra bagged second place. On the other hand, Bihar, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh have featured at the bottom of the list. The Index has been released in three categories.

The purpose of releasing this index is to assess the innovation system of states and union territories so that policy makers can give direction to their schemes based on it. The report was released by NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Rajiv Kumar and CEO Amitabh Kant. This index was issued based on three categories. First- Major States, Second- North-East and Hill States, Third- Union Territories and Small States.

Punjab, Bihar, Jharkhand are the least favorite states in terms of investment

Other states that have been ranked higher in the Innovation Index are Telangana, Haryana, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh. Karnataka is followed by Maharashtra, Haryana, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Telangana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh in terms of investment. Bihar, Jharkhand and Punjab are the least preferred states in terms of investment.

Manipur, Arunachal and Tripura are in the top three in the North-East and hill states. Lakshadweep, Delhi and Goa have achieved top positions in the Union Territories and smaller states.

States will get a chance to improve performance- NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Rajiv Kumar said that this index will help improve the innovation ecosystem across India. This will not only help in the formulation of strategy, but will also provide an opportunity to improve its performance with other states. Amitabh Kant said, “This initiative of NITI Aayog will help in understanding and improving the environment of innovation in the states.”
