“No Reason To Keep 22-Year-Old In Custody”: Delhi Court Grants Bail To Disha Ravi In “Toolkit” Case

Earlier on February 20, during 3 hours long hearing, the court had quizzed Delhi police over the link between the toolkit and R-day violence in Delhi.

22 years old climate activist Disha Ravi, who was arrested by the Delhi police from her Bengaluru residence on February 13 in the farmers protest ‘toolkit’ case, was granted bail by Delhi Court on Tuesday.

The Court granted her bail on two sureties of Rupees One Lakh each, LiveLaw reported.

Dharmender Rana, the Additional Sessions Judge of Patiala House Court Complex passed the verdict in Ravi’s bail application in which orders were reserved on February 20.

“Considering the scanty and sketchy evidence on record, I do not find any palpable reason to breach the rule of bail for a 22-year-old girl who has absolutely no criminal antecedent,” Additional Sessions Judge Dharmendra Rana said in his bail order.

Earlier on February 20, during 3 hours long hearing, the court had quizzed Delhi police over the link between the toolkit and R-day violence in Delhi.

“What exactly is the evidence collected by you against this lady connecting her to the violence perpetuated on Jan 26?Is there any evidence, or are required to merely work on surmises, conjectures?”, the judge had asked during bail hearing.

Appearing for the Delhi Police, Additional Solicitor General (ASG) SV Raju had opposed the bail plea alleging that Ravi was deleting and destroying the evidence. “Reasons for denying bail is tampering with the evidence,” ASG Raju had said.

The 21-year-old activist was not cooperating with the investigation, he had told the court. “The investigation is at the nascent stage. We are yet to confront her with the other accused. She later admitted that she deleted (the WhatsApp group)…her lie was caught and she admitted that she created the group,” he had said.

Siddarth Agarwal, the lawyer representing Ravi, had argued that the case is that there was a Khalistan conspiracy that took advantage of farmers’ protest and further their agenda, however, Disha Ravi has no connection with the Poetic Justice Foundation.

“They do not indicate any predisposition to attach her to the cause. She’s not a rebel without a cause. Her cause is environment and agriculture,” he had added.
