If you are corrupt and a thief in this country, you will be afraid. If you are not one of these then there is no need to fear,” he added.

Pegasus Project

According to a report published in ‘The Wire,’ the Indian government has spied on about 300 Indians between 2017 and 2019. These include journalists, lawyers, social workers, opposition leaders and businessmen. The report said that the phones of these 300 individuals were hacked through Pegasus spyware. However, the government has termed all the allegations as baseless.

Forbidden Stories-a Paris-based organization and Amnesty International have a list of about 50,000 phone numbers. They claim that these phone numbers are of individuals who have been targeted through Pegasus spyware. These two institutes have shared this list with 16 media institutes around the world.

The numbers of Indians in the database include over 40 journalists, three major opposition figures, one constitutional authority, two serving ministers in the Narendra Modi government, current and former heads and officials of security organisations and scores of businesspersons.
