PM Modi offered his condolences and applauded Abdullah’s call for social distancing amid the lockdown due to coronavirus spread.
New Delhi| PM Modi on Monday condoled the demise of Omar Abdullah’s uncle and praised former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister’s call for his followers not to gather at his home or at the graveyard amid guidelines by the government to avoid mass gatherings.
“Your prayers from your homes will give peace to his soul,” Abdullah had tweeted on Sunday sharing the news of his uncle Dr. Mohammed Ali Mattoo’s demise in Srinagar following a brief illness.

Prime Minister Modi offered his condolences saying, “In this hour of grief, your call to avoid any large gathering is appreciable and will strengthen India’s fight against COVID-19.”

India is under 21-day lockdown in order to contain the spread of Covid-19. The Indian government has iterated time and again that social distancing is the best option the country has to fight the spread of the deadly virus.
Responding to PM’s tweet, Omar Abdullah said, “My family joins me in thanking you very much for your message of condolence jenab. Your prayers for the departed soul are much appreciated.”

On Sunday night, the former CM of the state and National Conference leader, who was released last weeks after months of detention under Public Safety Act (PSA), went on Twitter to share the news of his uncle’s death after brief illness.
He also urged his followers, “At this difficult time the family appeals to everyone to respect the guidelines to not gather either at his residence or the graveyard. Your prayers from your homes will give peace to his soul.”
Former CM Mehbooba Mufti, who’s still under detention and her Twitter account has been handled by her daughter Iltija Mufti, also expressed condolences on the passing away of Abdullah’s uncle.
