States of Punjab, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala have been ranked as the best performers in the latest edition of the Performance Grading Index (PGI) released by the Education Ministry on Sunday. Gujarat dropped from second to the eighth rank in the index, while Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh are the only States which have seen actual regression in scores over this period.
Apart from Punjab, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala, UTs of Chandigarh and Andaman And Nicobar Islands have been graded ‘A++’ in school educations. Delhi, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, Puducherry and Dadra & Nagra Haveli have scored ‘A+’
The PGI rates performance in school education based on data drawn from the Unified District Information System for Education Plus, National Achievement Survey, Mid-Day Meal, Public Financial Management System, and the Shagun portal — all maintained by the department of school education.

In PGI, states are scored on a total of 1,000 points across 70 parameters, including access, infrastructure, equity, and learning outcomes.
The two concerns in the rankings remain on two parameters. In the ‘governance and management,’ domain 24 States/ UTs have scored less than 80% of the maximum possible score of 360.
The ‘Infrastructure and facilities’ domain is the second concern with 20 States/ UTs having scored less than 80% of a maximum score of 150 in this parameter.
