Sardar Patel Stadium In Ahmedabad, Biggest In World, Renamed As ‘Narendra Modi Stadium’

“His vision was that world’s largest cricket stadium be built here. This 1,32,000-seater stadium will be known as Narendra Modi Stadium,” HM Amit Shah said.

The Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad, earlier known as Motera Stadium, was today renamed as ‘Narendra Modi Stadium’. President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated the stadium.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat, Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju, and BCCI Secretary Jay Shah were present during the inauguration ceremony of the stadium.

Talking about Prime Minister’s name being given to the stadium, HM Amit Shah said: “As CM, he used to say Gujaratis must also progress in 2 fields-sports&armed forces. He took charge of GCA on my request&promoted sports here. His vision was that world’s largest cricket stadium be built here. This 1,32,000-seater stadium will be known as Narendra Modi Stadium.”

With reportedly a capacity of 1,32,000 spectators, the stadium in Ahmedabad is now the largest stadium. The Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad is oval in shape, in contrast to the shapes of majority of stadiums which are round. However, the shape is to ensure that the size of the boundary remains the same irrespective of the pitch on which a match is being played. There are a total of 11 pitches on the ground — six are of red soil and five of black soil.

The stadium in Ahmedabad will host the third India-England Test starting Wednesday.
