Asaram sentenced to life Imprisonment

Controversial guru Asaram Bapu who was convicted of raping a teenager at his ashram in 2013 has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a special court in Jodhpur.

The godman’s spokesperson, Neelam Dubey said that they will appeal in the high court against the verdict. She said that the sentence was a big blow and a disappointment, adding that the legal team will decide upon the course of further action.

The court has sentenced Asaram to a life term in the rape case, while two other of his aides Shilpi and Sharad are given 20 years in jail each. Earlier, the defence had sought minimum punishment for Asaram arguing that he is not a repeat offender. They have stated that the trust will definitely move the High Court against the verdict.

Home Ministry sources said that there is no report of violence so far from anywhere in the country after the verdict.
