Senior Congress Leader Mallikarjun Kharge Writes To PM Modi, Offers 6 Suggestions

India on Sunday reported 4,03,738 COVID-19 cases and 4092 fatalities in the last 24 hours.

Senior Congress Leader and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and suggested convening an all-party meeting and virtual meetings of Parliament Standing Committees to discuss the COVID-19 situation in the country.

In his letter to PM Modi, Mr. Kharge listed 6 suggestions to tackle the deadly second wave of the coronavirus pandemic in the country.

“Use 35,000 crores allocated in Union Budget to ensure free vaccine for all. Leverage compulsory licensing to increase production of vaccines,” Kharge said in his letter.

He further suggested expanding the scope of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) to 200 days.

“Expedite the distribution of relief material and proactively disclose where it is shipped and leverage our collective strengths by governing consensually and inclusively,” the Congress leader said in his letter to the Prime Minister.

His other suggestions included compulsory licensing of vaccines, and a GST waiver on life-saving products like vaccines, purchasing of ambulances, PPE kits, sanitizers, etc.

Earlier on Saturday, Congress Interim President Sonia Gandhi also called for an all-party meeting and a meeting of Parliament Standing Committee on Health to discuss the prevailing COVID-19 situation.

Meanwhile, India on Sunday reported 4,03,738 COVID-19 cases and 4092 fatalities in the last 24 hours. This is the fifth time in a week that the country has reported over 4 lakh daily infections. The total COVID-19 caseload stands at 2,22,96,414, according to Union Health Ministry data

Registering a steady increase, the active cases have increased to 37,36,648, comprising 16.76 percent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 82.15 percent.
