After Social Distancing Fails, BMC Shuts Liquor Shops In Mumbai

Just two days after approving liquor shops and non-essential shops in Mumbai to operate, on Tuesday the BMC ordered their closure.

Mumbai| Standalone liquor shops were allowed to re-open across the nation from May 4 except in the containment zones. The national lockdown to curb the spread of novel coronavirus has been extended for another two weeks.

Due to overcrowding, defying social distancing and the law & order situation arising as a result the shops selling alcohol have been shut down again, said BMC.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has decided to revoke the decision two days after these shops were allowed to operate.

Presently, only essential shops like grocery and medical will be permitted to function.

Cases in Mumbai, the financial capital of India, near 10,000-mark.

635 new cases of the novel coronavirus were recorded in the city on Tuesday, taking the total number of positive cases in the city to 9,758, MCGM said.

26 people died on Tuesday due to the virus in Mumbai taking the toll to 387.

In an attempt to curb the spread of the highly contagious COVID-19, Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) has been imposed in the city till May 17 by the Mumbai Police.

Section 144 of CrPC prohibits the assembly of four or more people in an area.

The total number of cases in Maharashtra– the worst affected state by the virus, has climbed to 15,525 with 617 deaths.

The total cases in India surged to 49,391 including over 14,000 cured/discharged or migrated and 1,694 deaths amid lockdown to curb the spread of COVID-19.
