South India Braces For Cyclone Nivar As Heavy Rains Continue To Lash Coastal Tamil Nadu Districts

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held discussions with the Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Tuesday about preparedness to tackle Cyclone Nivar.

 

Cyclone Nivar in the Bay of Bengal has caught pace. It has been raining continuously for the last 24 hours in Chennai and coastal Tamil Nadu districts. Many areas in this region are flooded. Former CM Karunanidhi’s house has also been flooded and its video is now going viral. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast it to turn into a dangerous cyclone.

According to the Cyclone Warning Center in Chennai, Cyclone Nivar is currently 350 km southeast of Chennai. It is moving towards north-west direction. It will cross Karaikal (Andhra Pradesh) and Mahabalipuram (Tamil Nadu) in the late evening or night. Wind speed will be of 145 kmph while cyclone passing through here. 1200 rescue troopers have been deployed in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Andhra Pradesh to deal with the storm. 800 such Troopers are placed on standby. Railways have cancelled 12 pairs of trains.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held discussions with the Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Tuesday about the prevention. Modi insisted on evacuating people from the low-lying areas and moving people to safer areas. The PM assured both the CMs of all possible help.

In the wake of the storm, large dams, including the Chamberambakkam in Tamil Nadu, are being constantly monitored. People living in low-lying areas are being evacuated to safer places. On Tuesday, the storm was 410 km from Puducherry and 450 km from Tamil Nadu. The rains have started in many parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry even before the storm came. The Meteorological Department has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in many places on Wednesday.
