President Ram Nath Kovind who was heading the meet observed that Mahatma Gandhi is not only an Indian leader but a global leader.

Delhi, May 3: Four Chief ministers from the Southern states Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala skipped the meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Kovind today. The meet was organized to discuss ideas to celebrate the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Apart from the CMs of southern states, Congress leaders Sonia and Rahul Gandhi too were missing from the meet. Chief Justice Dipak Mishra and Left Front leaders too gave the meeting arranged at Rashtrapati Bhavan a miss. However, chief ministers such as Nitish Kumar (Bihar) and Mamata Banerjee (West Bengal) attended the event also extended their ideas.

President Ram Nath Kovind who was heading the meet observed that Mahatma Gandhi is not only an Indian leader but a global leader. He said that the commemoration should be a “global celebration” and platforms like United Nations should be involved.

The Rashtrapati Bhavan release said that several suggestions came up during the meet. From travelling exhibitions, creating the infrastructure to specific help for farmers, a number of ideas were suggested to celebrate the Mahatma Gandhi’s Birth Anniversary.

Prime minister Modi in his suggestion said that the celebration programme should be focused on the theme ‘Gandhi in action’ and should include the use of technology. Modi noted that this way countries across the world can also participate. He also remarked that the celebration should not be limited to only government programmes but must take a shape of Mass participation.

President Kovind said, “Mahatma Gandhi does not belong to India alone but remains one of ‘Indiaā€™s greatest gifts to humankind’ and his name finds resonance across the continentsā€. ā€œMahatma Gandhi was the most influential Indian of the 20th century. He was the inspiration for our largely non-violent, inclusive and democratic freedom struggle,” Kovind said.
