Student Groups, Congress Workers And Others Detained While Staging Protest At UP Bhavan

In Delhi, various student groups and other political organizations gathered at the UP Bhavan to stage a protest against the violent incident at Lakhimpur Kheri.

New Delhi| Samyukt Kisan Morcha, the umbrella body of farmers, had called out protests outside the district magistrate offices across the country between 10 am to 1 pm. In Delhi, various student groups and other political organizations gathered at the UP Bhavan to stage a protest against the violent incident at Lakhimpur Kheri which led to death of farmers and several others injured.

Around 1:00 pm in the afternoon, much before people started gathering, the police had already sealed the entire area with barricades and water cannon vans in place. Prashant Kanojia, the national president of Rashtriya Lok Dal’s SC/ST wing, gathered there along with his party members chanting justice for the 4 farmers who died in the violent incident. While Mr. Kanojia was addressing the media, the police, first started to detain all the other party members and later took Mr. Kanojia with them inside the van.

After the RLD party workers were detained by the police, the Congress youth workers arrived at the site with banners and party flags. While some demanded CM Yogi’s resignation, some accused BJP and Modi for a dictator regime. In no time, the protestors started to jump on the other side of the barricade leading to yet another round of detention. Upon understanding that the crowd had moved out of hands, the police started to thrash everybody towards the van.

Earlier today, the farmers called off their protest against the deaths in the district after Uttar Pradesh government has announced that a retired High Court judge will probe the incident and rs.45 lakh compensation to families of victims of Sunday’s violence in Lakhimpur Kheri case. The police had earlier filed a first information report against Ashish Mishra, the son of Union minister Ajay Mishra, and several others in connection with the violence.
