Sushma Swaraj’s daughter fulfills mother’s promise, presents Rs 1 coin to Harish Salve as fees

Harish Salve took a symbolic fee of just one rupee to contest the Kulbhushan Jadhav case who is facing the death penalty in Pakistan on the charges of espionage.

New Delhi| Bansuri Swaraj, the daughter of former External Affairs Minister late Sushma Swaraj, has kept her mother’s promise. A few hours before her death, Sushma had telephoned lawyer Harish Salve and asked him to come home and get his 1 rupee fee. However, Sushma Swaraj passed away on 6 August on the same day. Senior advocate and former Solicitor General Harish Salve took a symbolic fee of just one rupee to contest the Kulbhushan Jadhav case who is facing the death penalty in Pakistan on the charges of espionage. The case is currently pending in International Court of Justice.

Sushma’s husband Swaraj Kaushal said in a tweet on Friday, “Sushma Swaraj, Bansuri has fulfilled your last wish today. One rupee of the fees of Kulbhushan Jadhav’s case which you had left, he has presented to Harish Salve today. ‘

In April 2017, when Kulbhushan Jadhav was sentenced to death by a Pakistan military court, Sushma Swaraj was then India’s foreign minister. On the very next day of this decision, she reiterated Jadhav as an innocent kidnapped Indian in both the houses of Parliament and made every effort to save him.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled in India’s favour in the Kulbhushan Jadhav case in July this year. The ICJ instructed Pakistan to first give India consular access to negotiate with Jadhav. Jadhav’s sentence will remain suspended until he does so. A day after this decision, Pakistan accepted the terms of the ICJ and agreed to give consular access to Kulbhushan. Lawyer Harish Salve took just one rupee for fighting this entire case in the International Court of Justice.
