Tamil Nadu: DMK sweeping away local body polls

Chennai : The ruling DMK is all set to win the local body elections which are being held in nine reorganised districts as per initial results of the polls for which counting of votes began at 8am on Tuesday. They were also leading in bypolls in most of the local bodies in 27 other districts.

The State Election Commission declared that DMK is leading the elections as per vote count till Tuesday night. It is leading in 88 district panchayat wards out of the total140 in the nine districts while its ally Congress was leading in four wards. The opposition AIADMK was leading in four wards.

The DMK was ahead in more than 300 panchayat union wards out of a total 1.381 in the nine districts while the Congress may add 11 wards to its kitty. The MDMK has won or leading in eight wards and VCK was leading in three. The AIADMK has won or was leading in more than 50 wards and its ally BJP was leading in one ward, PMK, which contested alone, has won or was leading in 13 wards.

The AMMK which contested alone had won or is leading in three wards. Independent candidates have won or were leading in 30 wards.

If the trends continue, the DMK and its allies will garner more than 75% of the district panchayat wards and panchayat union wards. The DMK alliance may end up winning more than 110 out of 140 district panchayat wards and more than 1.100 out of 1.381 panchayat union wards.
