“It will take time for the numbers of coronavirus infections to increase at the national level, but in the next 6 to 8 weeks, the third wave can hit,” AIIMS Chief said.
New Delhi| In the month of June, India seems to be getting some relief from the second wave of coronavirus but it has not slowed down completely. Meanwhile, AIIMS Chief Randeep Guleria has sounded alarm bell of caution. He said that the third wave of Covid-19 could hit India as soon as 6-8 weeks i.e. within 2 months.
In an interview with NDTV, he said unlock process in several parts of the country and blatant disregard for Covid protocols could accelerate the third wave. Dr Guleria said that while the numbers have come down now, they may rise again in the next two months. “We have started the process of unlocking and again there is negligence in following the coronavirus restrictions. It seems as if we didn’t learn anything from what happened in the first and second waves. The crowd is gathering again. People are gathering. It will take time for the numbers of coronavirus infections to increase at the national level, but in the next 6 to 8 weeks, the cases will start increasing. It all depends on how we are following the coronavirus protocols and preventing crowd gathering,” he said.

The second wave of the pandemic in India led to massive devastation. There was a shortage of medical supplies along with a shortage of beds in hospitals. In the midst of the second wave, many states had imposed strict restrictions, which are now being relaxed.
Notably, Dr Guleria’s prediction on the Third Wave comes days after Maharashtra Covid Task Force reportedly predicted that the Third Wave could hit the state as soon as 2-4 weeks.
Coronavirus infection has killed more than 40 lakh people worldwide so far. India, America, Brazil, Russia and Mexico contribute 50 per cent of the Covid deaths. At the same time, 60,753 new cases of coronavirus have been registered in India within the last 24 hours. After this, now the active cases in the country have come down to 7,60,000.
