Tripura CM Biplab Deb Says Punjabis and Jats Are “Low Minded”, Then Apologizes

Recently, in a speech given during an event at Agartala Press Club, Biplab Deb said that while Punjabis and Jat Brothers are brave, they have low intelligence.

Agartala| Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb had another foot in mouth moment on Monday over his remarks on Jats and Punjabis. Addressing an event in the state capital he had said that Jat and Sikh community has “Low Intelligence”. His comments kicked up fresh row and uproar among the communities.

Recently, in a speech given in the local language during an event at Agartala Press Club, Biplab Deb also said that Bengalis are more sharp-minded than these two communities. He had said that while Punjabis and Jat Brothers are brave, they have low intelligence. Congress national spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala shared a video of his speech slamming the BJP.

He called the statement by Biplab Deb shameful and insulting. He said, “This is the right mindset of the BJP. Why are Khattarji and Dushyant Chautala silent? Where are Modi Ji and Nadda Ji? Demand apology and take action.”

After the row over his statement, Tripura CM finally apologized on Tuesday. He tweeted that he is proud of these communities and he didn’t intend to hurt anyone. He tweeted, “In an event organized at Agartala Press Club, I had mentioned the views of some people about my Punjabi and Jat brothers. My impression was not to hurt any society. I am proud of both Punjabi and Jat communities. I myself have lived among them for a long time.” “If my statement has hurt anyone’s feelings, I am personally apologetic for that,” he added.

Not the first Faux Pas:

This wasn’t the first time Biplab Deb made headlines for his bizarre statements. On 18 April 2018, he had claimed that the Internet was discovered during the Mahabharata period. He had even claimed that this war was seen live. He gave examples of Dhritarashtra and Sanjay. On April 26, eight days later, he put the question mark on Miss World Competition. He said that Diana Hayden did not deserve to become Miss World. He even praised Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. After a massive backlash, he had to apologize for his statement.
