Uddhav Relieved As Congress Withdraws Second Candidate For MLC Elections

Uddhav Thackeray was unanimously elected as the MVA Chief Minister on November 28. With the MLC elections, he will make his debut as a legislator.

Mumbai| The stage is set for all nine candidates including Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray in the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections to be elected unopposed in the May 21 elections sources said.

The Congress decided to withdraw its second candidate late on Sunday.

Earlier, Congress had determined to field only one candidate for the May 21 election but state Congress chief Balasaheb Thorat, on Saturday evening, tweeted that Rajkishor will be party’s second candidate. The party on Saturday announced two candidates — Rajesh Rathod and Rajkishor Modi — for the nine seats of Vidhan Parishad.

The 288-member Maharashtra Assembly forms electoral college for the polls, and a candidate needs 29 votes to win. Congress has 44 MLAs.

CM Uddhav Thackeray is comfortably placed. There was an opinion that these elections should be held unchallenged during COVID-19 crisis.

The ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance of the Shiv Sena, the Nationalist Congress Party and the Congress will get five seats, while the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party will get four, without a contest.
