Trump had wondered if it would be helpful to inject disinfectant into people to fight the coronavirus. The comments shocked many health experts and doctors who warned that it is a dangerous idea.
Washington| On Friday, it was the first time that US President Donald Trump cut-off his daily Covid-19 briefing without taking any questions from reporters after his disinfectant remark garnered criticism.
According to the Associated Press, four White House officials and Republicans close to the White House who spoke on condition of anonymity told that there have been discussions in White House about changing the format of daily briefings to curtail the role of President Trump. The usual briefings often cross one hour and involve a heated exchange between Trump and reporters.
Trump was angry on Friday because of the punishing headlines due to his ‘disinfectant’ remarks in an earlier briefing. Trump had wondered if it would be helpful to inject disinfectant into people to fight the coronavirus. The comments shocked many health experts and doctors who warned that it is a dangerous idea and the President should avoid talking without medical expert’s advice on the Covid-19 issues.
Though, Trump had an interaction with reporters on Friday where he said that his ‘disinfectant’ remarks were “sarcastic”. The transcript of his remarks, though, suggests otherwise.
For weeks, advisors have been telling President Trump to reduce his appearances at the briefings and come out only when there is major news or positive development to discuss. Otherwise, advisors have allegedly suggested, that Trump should leave the briefings to Vice President Mike Pence and other health officials.
Trump, on the other hand, has been reluctant to cede the spotlight he’s been garnering due to the briefings. He has often stressed about his robust ratings in the briefings and drowned out his likely general election opponent, Democrat Joe Biden.
Bu the advisors have argued that though the briefings might have attracted Trump supporters, they have also alienated many people, including senior citizens who are worried about their health.
