Delhi Police had opposed freeing the three in SC and said crime was not committed only against the victim, but against society

New Delhi: Supreme Court on November 7 acquitted three men convicted for raping and killing a 19-year-old in Delhi’s Chhawla area in 2012. The Delhi High Court had given them a death sentence after being held guilty of raping and murdering a teen. The Delhi High Court had termed the three men, predators, looking for prey on the streets.

The victim’s body was found in a field with multiple injuries in Haryana’s Rewari district, days after she was kidnapped. The injuries were proof of the victim being assaulted with objects ranging from car tools to earthen pots.

In 2014, Delhi HC convicted three men for raping and killing a 19-year-old woman in 2012 and sentenced death penalty. Three men, Ravi Kumar, Rahul, and Vinod were convicted under various charges dealing with kidnapping, rape, and murder.

In Delhi’s Najafgarh police station a case was registered against the three men. In the complaint, it was alleged that the victim was first kidnapped, raped, and then murdered.

The three convicts challenged the High Court’s hearing in Supreme Court. They appealed that their sentence should be reduced. The bench of Chief Justice of India UU Lalit and Justices S Ravindra Bhat and Bela M Trivedi canceled the High Court ruling. They further said that the three men would be acquitted.

Delhi Police had opposed freeing the three in SC. They had said crime was not committed only against the victim, but against society. Citing the heinous nature of the crime, the police argued against any concession being given to the convicts.

Following the SC’s verdict, the girl’s parents said that they were broken by the judgment. Accusing the system they said,  “We came here for justice. This is a blind justice system.” Underlining their 12-year struggle for justice, they also alleged that the convicts would threaten them inside the courtroom.
