Assam Floods: Casualty Count Hikes As Floods Hit 32 Districts

Severe loss to infrastructure and lives as rivers flow above danger levels in the North East: Assam

Guwahati: Assam this week battered with incessant rain-fall and flash floods reported 42 deaths across the 32 severely hit districts, as a reported 40 lakhs have been affected in the North-Eastern pocket of states.

Reports recorded eight deaths in the last 24 hours.

Assam officials earlier today reported that 32 of its 33 states are presently engulfed as five major rivers in the Northeastern state remained above the danger level. Lower Assam, that the incessant rainfall severely submerged, reported that at least 4,000 of its villages were hit.

“Situation is very bad. We are trying hard to help the people. Temporary bridges are being built in flood-affected districts to reach the people,” Assam’s Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika told sources.

As this week recorded 24 deaths from landslides and flash floods in Assam, the total death count hiked to 62 since April.

Meghalaya

Meghalaya reported 18 deaths as an estimated five lakh remain affected. Two of the state’s major highways remain inaccessible due to fatal infrastructural damage from the landslides.

The state recorded the third-highest rainfall on Friday since 1998.

With 18 deaths and thousands displaced, Minister Conrad Sangma declared a reprisal of Rs. 4 lakh financial aid to the deceased’s family.

Tripura

According to official reports, 10,000 people remain evicted due to landslides in the state.

The state has reported no deaths so far.

The state that has incurred severe infrastructural damage has requested the central government authorities to send essentials via Bangladesh as the route to the state is cut off due to landslides.

Heavy rains are expected this week for the state of Sikkim.
