After days of speculations in political corridors, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today formally resigned from the top post. This move confirms his breakup with the BJP. The JD(U) supremo handed over his resignation to Bihar governor Phagu Chauhan. He is likely to meet the current leader of opposition and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, with whom he will stake a claim to form new government. Along with RJD, other members of Mahagathbandhan like Congress, CPI (ML), CPI (M) and CPI will support Nitish Kumar.
The Nitish Kumar-led JD(U) had won 45 seats in the last assembly election which it fought in alliance with the BJP. Lalu Prasad Yadav’s party had won 75 seats in the election. However, the RJD increased its tally to 80 MLAs in the assembly after AIMIM legislators joined the party. The grand old party has 19 MLAs in the state, with left-wing parties comprising 16 MLAs. With support of these parties, Nitish Kumar has comfortably crossed the majority of mark 122 seats.
Nitish Kumar, whose party has blamed the saffron party for trying to finish it from Bihar, will be once again forming a government with the RJD, which he broke up with in 2017 after two years of being in power. The resignation by Mr Kumar back then came in the aftermath of corruption allegations against then Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav. Mr Kumar, citing “voice of his inner conscience”, had said that he was not able to run the state as he wished in alliance with the RJD. He then went on to join hands with the BJP and formed government.
