Chandigarh Poll Officer’s New Video Emerges After SC Criticism

In the ongoing controversy surrounding the Chandigarh mayoral election. A new video has surfaced on social media, revealing the Presiding Officer, Anil Masih, signing ballot papers while being captured by a CCTV camera in the hall. The footage, taken from the camera’s top angle, raises concerns about the fairness of the January 30 elections won by the BJP. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Swati Maliwal shared the video, accusing Masih of being caught red-handed.

This development follows the Supreme Court’s criticism of the Returning Officer (RO), stating that it is evident he defaced the ballot papers. He should be prosecuted for his actions, which amount to a ‘mockery’ and ‘murder’ of democracy.

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, leading a three-judge Division bench, expressed deep concern and asserted that democracy should not be undermined. The court mentioned the possibility of ordering fresh elections if the poll process’s purity is doubtful.

The Supreme Court’s directive includes preserving the ballots and video footage of the poll proceedings. Anil Masih has been summoned to appear in person during the next hearing on February 19.

Justice Chandrachud pointed out the RO’s defacement of ballot papers and emphasized the need for prosecution, stating that this behaviour is a mockery of democracy. The court’s move came after the AAP approached the Supreme Court challenging a Punjab and Haryana High Court order that denied interim relief, seeking fresh mayoral polls in Chandigarh.

The BJP secured victory in the Chandigarh mayoral polls on January 30, retaining all three posts and defeating the Congress-AAP alliance. The controversy and legal battles continue to unfold, highlighting concerns about the integrity of the electoral process in Chandigarh.
