Chief Justice Of India NV Ramana Suggests Justice UU Lalit As His Successor

Law Minister Kiren Rijiju, on Wednesday, had written to CJI NV Ramana requesting him to recommend the name of his successor.

The Chief Justice of India, NV Ramana, on Thursday recommended justice UU Lalit as his successor, reported news agency ANI. Ramana is the 48th and current Chief Justice of India. Justice Lalit to become the 49th CJI. Chief Justice Ramana is retiring this month.

Uday Umesh Lalit is a Judge of the Supreme Court of India. Before his elevation as a judge, he practiced as a senior counsel at the Supreme Court. Justice Lalit is only the 6th senior advocate ever to be directly elevated to the apex court.

One of the senior-most judges of the top Court Justice U U Lalit, who is in the race to become the next Chief Justice of India (CJI), has been part of several landmark judgments including the one which held the practice of divorce through instant โ€˜triple talaqโ€™ among Muslims illegal and unconstitutional.

Law Minister Kiren Rijiju, on Wednesday, had written to CJI NV Ramana requesting him to recommend the name of his successor. The letter, dated August 3, was received by the Chief Justiceโ€™s office late yesterday evening.

NV Ramana will retire as the Chief Justice Of India on August 26.

New Delhi: Delhi Police has registered an FIR against โ€œoffensiveโ€ remarks made on daughters of cricketers Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma on Twitter after Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chairperson Swati Maliwal has sent a notice in this regard.

โ€œAfter my notice, Delhi Police has registered an FIR in the case of offensive comments made on the daughters of Virat Kohli and Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Very soon all the culprits will be arrested and behind bars,โ€ DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal tweeted with a copy of her complaint.

The Delhi Police has confirmed to ANI that an FIR has been registered by the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations Unit (IFSO) of the special cell.
