Coldwave, Thunderstorm, Hail, Smog: IMD Issues Alert To North India

India’s north region continues to shiver under intense cold waves. The IMD issued warnings for Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir in the coming days of further chilly winters. States like Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh are also likely to experience severe colds till the end of this week.

Meanwhile, New Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 22.4°C on Wednesday. This was slightly above average, the minimum temperature dropped to 7°C on Thursday. The minimum and maximum temperatures are predicted to be 9 degrees Celsius and 20 degrees Celsius respectively.

Reports suggest a thick fog has enveloped the city. Considering the fog the Delhi Airport implemented low-visibility protocols. “All flight operations are presently normal,” the advisory read. However, the flights remained unaffected.

But, the dense fog has delayed 18 trains to Delhi. Due to dense fog conditions, the Duronto Express and the Avadh Assam Express are running late. The visibility level amidst the thick fog at 7 am was 500 meters.

Furthermore, the IMD predicts a further drop in temperature starting from December 27. Thunderstorms and hail are expected in Delhi-NCR during this period. The neighboring states like Punjab and Haryana will also likely experience thunderstorms on December 27-28. Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar recorded a frigid -7.3°C on Christmas Day.

Meanwhile, Delhi’s air quality still remains in the ‘very poor’ category. Mild rainfall is anticipated later today in some regions of New Delhi. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for the day, forecasting moderate to dense fog during the morning and night.
