Jairam Ramesh: Other Congress Leaders Speak For Self, Not INC

The spokesperson for the Congress said that the views of the main leaders alone represent the position of the INC

On Monday, Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh stated that party members who have been addressing the media regarding the Pahalgam terrorist attack are expressing personal opinions and do not represent the official stance of the Indian National Congress (INC).

He noted that the Congress Working Committee convened on April 24. The INC adopted a resolution condemning the heinous attack on tourists in Pahalgam that occurred two days prior.

โ€œThereafter on April 25th 2025 the Congress President and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha attended the all-party meeting and put forward the partyโ€™s views. Some Congress leaders have been speaking to the media. They speak for themselves and do not reflect the INCโ€™s views,โ€ Jairam Ramesh said on X.

Ramesh added, โ€œThere should be absolutely no doubt whatsoever at this most sensitive of times that the CWC resolution, the views expressed by Shri Mallikarjun Kharge and Shri Rahul Gandhi and the views of authorised AICC office-bearers ALONE represent the position of the INC.โ€

This statement follows a backlash over comments made by certain Congress leaders. This is about the recent attack, including Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiahโ€™s assertion that there is โ€˜no need for war.โ€™

The Pahalgam attack on April 22 resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals, primarily tourists.

In addition to Siddaramaiah, Maharashtra Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar, Karnataka Minister RB Timmapur, and Robert Vadra, brother-in-law of Rahul Gandhi, have also made statements regarding the incident. Their statements have drawn criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

BJPโ€™S Ravi Shankar Prasad in a press conference on Monday, said, โ€œDo Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge have no control over their party? Or both of them made pro forma comments while letting others the freedom to speak as they wished.โ€

Prasad specifically highlighted Wadettiwar and Timmapur for questioning the accounts of some victims.  These victims reported that terrorists identified non-Muslims before executing them.

On Sunday, Karnataka Minister RB Timmapur expressed skepticism. He was skeptical about the practicality of terrorists inquiring about a victimโ€™s religion prior to shooting. โ€œA man who is shooting, will he ask caste or religion? He will just shoot and go. Think practically. He will not stand there, ask, and then shoot,โ€ the excise minister of Karnataka said.

Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar also told a similar statement, asking, โ€œdo terrorists have time to ask for religion?โ€
