India Condemns Killing Of Hindu Minority Leader in Bangladesh

The Hindu leader was abducted and beaten severely, leading to his death.

On Saturday, India condemned the kidnapping and killing of a Hindu minority leader, Bhabesh Chandra Roy in Bangladesh, urging the interim government that is led by Muhammad Yunus-to “live up to its responsibility” of protecting all the minorities in the country.

The Ministry of External Affairs called the killing of the Hindu leader “a pattern of systematic persecution of Hindu minorities” under the interim government.

In a statement on X, Randhir Jaiswal, the official spokesperson for the MEA said “We have noted with distress the abduction and brutal killing of Shri Bhabesh Chandra Roy, a Hindu minority leader in Bangladesh. This killing follows a pattern of systematic persecution of Hindu minorities under the interim government even as the perpetrators of previous such events roam with impunity.”

“We condemn this incident and once again remind the interim government to live up to its responsibility of protecting all minorities, including Hindus, without inventing excuses or making distinctions,” he concluded.

As per Bangladesh-based daily The Daily Star, Bhabesh Chandra Roy, a 58-year-old Hindu leader residing in Dinajpur’s Biral, was beaten to death last week after he was abducted from his home.

Roy was the vice-president of the Biral unit of the Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad and a prominent leader of the Hindu community within that area.

His wife Shantana told The Daily Star that he got a call the evening he got abducted, probably from the abductors confirming his presence at home. The abductors came half an hour later in the evening and abducted him away.

According to witnesses he was taken to the Narabari village, where he was brutally assaulted. His unconscious body was later taken to his home by the perpetrators. Roy was rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Ever since Sheikh Hasina fled Dhaka last year in August in the face of a massive protest against her government, relations between India and Bangladesh have fallen drastically.

The relations have nosedived even further after the president Muhammad Yunus failed to contain attacks especially on Hindus.
