India plans to allocate nearly $3.7 billion to fence its 1,610-km (1,000-mile) porous border with Myanmar over approximately ten years to curb smuggling and illicit activities. The government intends to end the visa-free movement policy with Myanmar due to national security concerns and to preserve the northeastern region’s demographic structure. According to a report, a government committee recently sanctioned the fencing cost, pending approval from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet.
