INS Surat Test Fires Missile After Pahalgam Attack

India is closely monitoring new developments in Pakistan after the Pahalgam attack

In a powerful demonstration of its advanced air defence capabilities, the Indian Navy successfully test-fired the INS Surat (D69) today, launching a Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) against a sea-skimming target in the Arabian Sea.

This successful firing showcases the destroyerโ€™s ability to effectively counter modern aerial threats, including those that approach at low altitudes to evade radar detection.

This development occurs amid heightened tensions following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, as Pakistan plans to conduct a surface-to-surface missile test near its Karachi coast within its Exclusive Economic Zone on April 24-25.

Indian defence agencies are closely monitoring all developments related to this situation, according to defence sources, especially in light of the current security scenario.

The horrific situation saw at least four terrorists descend upon the popular tourist spot, wielding sophisticated and dangerous M4 carbines and AK-47 assault rifles, according to eyewitness accounts.

The attack ignited widespread international condemnation, with the United Nations Secretary-General, the US President, and leaders from several European and Asian nations denouncing the act of terror.

In a decisive response, the Indian government summoned Pakistanโ€™s top diplomat and declared its military diplomats persona non grata. Furthermore, the government announced additional punitive measures, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, the closure of the Attari border crossing, and a ban on travel to India for Pakistani nationals under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme.

On January 15, 2025, the Indian Navy put the fourth and last of the Visakhapatnam-class (Project 15B) stealth guided-missile destroyers, commissioning the INS Surat into service. The MRSAM is a vertically launched supersonic missile with a high response and quick reaction that was developed in collaboration with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and Indiaโ€™s Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO).

With a stated range of up to 70 kilometers, it is intended to destroy a broad variety of aerial threats. This includes guided bombs, helicopters, planes, and missiles.
