Islamic preacher Mufti Salman Azhari was arrested in Mumbai by Gujarat Police’s Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in collaboration with local authorities. The arrest, prompted by an alleged inflammatory speech, led to demonstrations outside the Ghatkopar police station, where Mufti was detained.
Reportedly, Mufti’s supporters gathered in large numbers, causing traffic disruptions, and were dispersed by police using lathis. Mumbai Police registered a case against the assembled crowd following Mufti’s arrival at the station. Inside, Mufti addressed his followers, urging them not to protest, asserting his innocence, and stating his willingness to cooperate with authorities.
Mufti, along with two others, faced charges under Sections 153B and 505(2) of the Indian Penal Code for allegedly promoting religious discord through a speech circulated online from Junagadh, Gujarat. Gujarat Police previously arrested the other individuals, Mohammad Yousuf Malek and Azim Habib Odedara, as local organizers.

Seeking assistance, Gujarat Police enlisted Maharashtra Police to apprehend Mufti. Around 35 to 40 plainclothes officers reportedly arrived at Mufti’s residence in Mumbai, declining to disclose the purpose of their visit until later. Mufti’s legal representative stated that while Mufti cooperated with authorities, no official explanation regarding the case lodged in Gujarat has been provided.
Following his arrest, Mufti is transported back to Junagadh on a two-day transit remand by Gujarat Police. The incident highlights tensions surrounding freedom of speech and religious sentiments, prompting legal actions and public demonstrations.
