“It Is A Misconception That You Get Solutions In The Supreme Court”: Kapil Sibal

Mr.Kapil Sibal further said, “The Chief Justice of India decides which case will go where, when they will be heard. Such courts cannot be independent. Sensitive cases, jisme problem hai (which are problematic), invariably go to a select few judges. We know what the judgment will be.”

Senior advocate and Rajya Sabha member Kapil Sibal, on Saturday at the Constitution Club, said that “sensitive” cases are now invariably assigned to a few select judges in the Supreme Court, and the legal fraternity usually knows what the judgment would be. The former congress leader said, “It is a misconception that you get solutions in the Supreme Court”.

Accusing the allotment of judges based on compromise, he said, “I have no hope from this institution — jis court mein judge bithaye jate hain (where judges are assigned cases) through a process of compromise,” he said.

Mr.Kapil Sibal further said, “The Chief Justice of India decides which case will go where, when they will be heard. Such courts cannot be independent. Sensitive cases, jisme problem hai (which are problematic), invariably go to a select few judges. We know what the judgment will be.”

“The situation will not change if people don’t change their mindset. In India we have mai-baap culture: people fall at the feet of the powerful. But the time has come for the people to come out and demand protection of their rights,” Mr. Sibal added.

Recently While addressing the recent PMLA(Prevention of money laundering act)  judgment passed by the Supreme Court (Vijay Madanlal Choudhary v. Union of India), Mr. Sibal stated that the Enforcement Directorate had become extremely dangerous and that it had “crossed the lines of individual liberty.”

Former Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, after a gaffe in a television interview, is now being trolled for his definition of ‘Unicorns’. Netizens pointed out that Mr Prasad, while preaching to Rahul Gandhi on the successes of startups during Modi regime, claimed that “Unicorn means, your revenue is $1 billion.”

Earlier, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had hit out at the BJP over inflation and unemployment in India. He also took swipe at ‘Startup India’ and said that startups Really kicking people out. “Show me where is Startup India.”

Mr Prasad, replying to the Congress leaders’ comments, said in a television interview: “Indian startups are known all over the world. Hundreds of startups have become unicorns. I don’t know whether Rahul Gandhi knows the meaning of unicorn or not.” Mr Prasad, then, goes on to explain what unicorns are. However, he unfortunately gets in wrong. “Unicorn means, your revenue is $1 billion,” said Mr Prasad.

Mr Prasad’s video has now gone viral, with netizens asking him to prepare arguments in advance before claiming anything on television.

In business, a unicorn is a privately held startup company valued at over US$1 billion. The term is used in the context of valuation of the company, and not revenue, as claimed by Mr Prasad.

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, taking a jibe at the BJP leader, wrote on Twitter: “BJP leaders have difficulty in learning the difference between revenue & valuation. Then they preach to @RahulGandhi, who does know the meaning of “unicorn”, unlike those sent to lecture him about it.”

Congress spokesperson Gaurav Vallabh tweeted, “This gentleman has been the IT and Law Minister of the country for 5 years (2016-21). @rsprasad Ji, UNICORN does not mean your revenue, but your valuation has reached one billion dollars. Now we can understand what would have happened to the IT sector of the country in five years.”

Another Twitter user said a “new definition of unicorn has come to the market”.
