Karnataka Fuel Price Hike Sparks BJP Outrage and Threats of Statewide Protests

The Karnataka government increased petrol and diesel prices by Rs 3 and Rs 3.02, respectively, following a hike in sales tax. According to a government notification, the Karnataka Sales Tax (KST) on petrol rose from 25.92% to 29.84% and on diesel from 14.3% to 18.4%. This immediate price increase has drawn strong criticism from BJP leaders, who have demanded a rollback.

BJP state chief BY Vijayendra announced that the party would stage statewide protests on Monday if the decision is not reversed. “We will stage protests across the state in all district centres and other places on Monday if the Chief Minister and the government do not take back the decision of price hike of petrol and diesel. I demand them to roll back the fuel price hike decision,” Vijayendra said.

BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla accused the Congress-led state government of betraying the people, saying, “The true face of the Congress party has been exposed.” The BJP’s threat of statewide protests indicates a significant political backlash against the Siddaramaiah-led government’s decision to increase fuel prices.
