In a strongly-worded eviction notice, Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra has been instructed by the Centre to promptly vacate a government bungalow allocated to her as an MP. The Directorate of Estates, responsible for managing government properties, warns that failure to leave voluntarily may result in eviction, utilizing force if necessary.
This action follows Moitra’s expulsion as a Lok Sabha MP over alleged unethical conduct, including accepting costly gifts from a business person and sharing Parliament login credentials. The government’s notice asserts that despite sufficient opportunities, Moitra failed to demonstrate she is not an unauthorized occupant.
Despite the expulsion, earlier this month, the Delhi High Court advised Moitra to request the Directorate of Estates to allow her temporary residence in the bungalow. Under exceptional circumstances, the court cited rules allowing authorities to permit residency for up to six months with payment of specified charges.

While not commenting on the case’s merits, the court permitted Moitra to withdraw her petition. The eviction order notes the absence of an injunction against eviction proceedings and specifies that if Moitra challenges the notice in court, she must pay damages monthly.
Moitra currently occupies a bungalow in Delhi’s Telegraph Lane. The government cancelled her accommodation allotment on January 7, a month after expulsion. Moitra, seeking time until the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, argued that losing government accommodation would impede her campaign. The eviction notice underscores the absence of any injunction against eviction proceedings and stipulates potential damages if Moitra challenges the notice in court.
