Marco Rubio Calls India EAM, Pakistan FM; States ‘De-escalation’

These talks follow India’s strikes back in retaliation at Pakistan after it launched an attack at 26 locations along northern India

As Pakistan-India relations have taken a hit, the US is trying to de-escalate the tensions between the two nations.

On Saturday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke to Ishaq Dar, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister. He stressed on the call for both countries to “re-establish direct communication” between each other. This is according to the press statement from the US Department of State.

“Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. Secretary Rubio reiterated that both parties must find ways to de-escalate the current situation and re-establish direct communication to avoid miscalculation,” the statement read.

Rubio earlier spoke to India’s External Affairs Minister Subramanhyam Jaishankar and shared a similar message with him, when he met him on Saturday. He emphasized on importance to de-escalate and re-establish relations with Pakistan.

He also spoke to General Asim Munir, Pakistan’s Army Chief on Friday. This was shortly after the IMF gave consent to send a 1.1 billion US dollar loan to Pakistan. While speaking to him, Rubio urged about “avoiding further conflict”. He spoke about the US’ s commitment to bring “constructive dialogue” between both the neighbours, Pakistan and India.

Jaishankar after talking to the US Secretary of State wrote about his conversation with him on X.

The EAM wrote, “Had a conversation with US Secretary of state Marco Rubio this morning. India’s approach has always been measured and responsible and remains so.”

These talks follow India’s strikes back in retaliation at Pakistan after it launched an attack at 26 locations along northern India. India struck at least four airbases in Pakistan.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia stated that it was trying to calm down tensions between India and Pakistan through diplomatic ways. The Kingdom’s Foreign Ministry stated their directives from the leadership of Saudi. They said that on May 8 and 9, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs al-Jubeir visited New Delhi and Islamabad. This was Saudi Arabia’s “ongoing efforts to reduce tensions, halt military clashes, and support peaceful solutions.”
