Mumbai: The Central Government announced additional revisions to the Supreme Court Judges Rules, 1959 (Rules) on Friday. Among other things, the amendments provide for the lifelong service of retiring Chief Justices of India by domestic helpers, chauffeurs, and secretary assistants. After retirement, Supreme Court judges would be entitled to lifelong domestic help and a chauffeur. The regulations were previously changed on August 23 to include provisions for a former CJI and SC judge’s chauffeur and secretarial assistance for a period of one year following retirement. However, these benefits are now lifetime benefits thanks to the most recent revision, which was announced on August 26.

The Supreme Court Judges (Salaries and Condition of Service) Act’s Sections 24(1), 24(2)(c), and 24(2)(f) grant it certain authority, which it has exercised. Rule 3B, which addresses the post-retirement perks of Supreme Court judges, was modified by the Centre in 1958.

According to a 2022 change to the Rules, retiring Supreme Court judges would have access to round-the-clock personal security guards and security coverage at their homes for a period of five years following their retirement. For a period of three years following retirement, retiring Supreme Court justices would get a similar level of security coverage.

Additionally, a retired CJI would be qualified to receive free Type-VII housing in Delhi for six months upon retirement.

Retired Supreme Court justices, including the Chief Justice of India, are entitled to customary courtesy in airport ceremonial lounges. Additionally, they would be eligible for a residential phone and monthly reimbursements of up to Rs. 4200 plus taxes for residential phone, mobile phone, mobile data, and broadband.

The benefits listed above would apply to retired Supreme Court judges and chief justices in as much as they are not already receiving benefits of a comparable nature from any High Courts or other governmental bodies where they have taken on duties after retirement.
